HSS Elective-I

This course aims to discuss political, social, cultural and economic transformations in the 19th century in their relation with the formation of the Republican Turkey and focuses on the modernization process in the early republican period until 1945.

Functional analysis and spatial planning; contextual concerns and urban design issues; the relationships between public, semi-public and private spaces. Specialized programmatic elements such as conference halls, offices, libraries, etc and their spatial configurations. Structural solutions with regard to repeating units, circulation patterns, integration of building systems, accessibility and ergonomics.

City planning process and historical development. Urban elements: working, living, resting areas and transportation. Settlement densities and construction coefficients. Zoning plans, aims and metrics. The relationship between architecture, zoning law and instructions. Principles of urban design. Urban pattern formation. Application work: analysis of the urban pattern in a part of a city developed in the historical process, using the metric scale of 1/1000 and 1/500. Definition of problems and suggestions

Project management planning, cost management, time management, quality management, contract administration, safety management, and the responsibilities and structure of the project management team. Organizing and leading by implementing project controls, defining roles and responsibilities, developing communication protocols, and identifying elements of project design and construction which may lead to disputes and claims.

Mechanical heating and cooling systems: heating, ventilation, airconditioning (HVAC systems). Environmental systems, installation, fire control, service cores, elevators, illumination, building automation systems, building envelope. Accessibility, life safety and legal responsibilities.

Consolidation of the knowledge and skills obtained through theoretical and practical lectures of architecturaleducation, with the real design, construction, management and production processes. (Practice in construction site)

Complementary Elective-I

Political, social and cultural development of Turkey since WWII. Transition to multi-party system, social transformation in 1960s and 1970s, as well as the demographical change, industrialization and new social movements. The coup d'état of 1980 and its aftermath, political and social polarization in 2000s.

Advanced studies integrating architectural design theory and practice that influence the shaping of built environment. Personalized processes of data collection, analysis and building programming which reflect the nature and interests of designers. Application of knowledge about structures, detailing and construction throughout the design process.
